Virginia Leads Region with Hybrid Cars
ASHINGTON (AP) - Prince William County (website - news) drivers seem to like the environment - and the idea of saving money on gas.
A new survey by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments shows Washington area households are more than twice as likely as the rest of the nation to own hybrid vehicles. And Prince William tops the list of all area counties in hybrid ownership.
The fuel-efficient gas-electric cars are especially popular in Northern Virginia, where hybrid drivers are allowed to use car pool lanes without any passengers along for the ride.
Northern Virginia jurisdictions average nearly eleven hybrids per thousand households, compared with 3.6 in D.C. and 3.25 in suburban Maryland.
Prince William County led all area counties with nearly 15 hybrids per thousand households. That's more than four times the national average of 3.3.
